Home theaters with front projection screens have a problem. As a result, the sound is somewhat chesty; any floor covering eats the highs while emphasizing the bass and mids.The Auralex MoPADs are a cost effective solution for safely tipping the center channel up towards the listening position and have the added benefit of decoupling the speaker from the stand. For best sound, the center channel speaker should ideally be placed in the center of the screen. Unless you can put it behind the screen (an expensive option), the center channel speaker ends up on a short stand below instead. The result is open sound that closely matches the front speakers. Have a look at the two photos that I posted to see how we use them.Highly recommended; however, unless you have two theater rooms, you'll have an extra pair of pads since the package comes with four.
I have 2 KRK Rokit 5s on the pads and have my Mackie 824's really isolated. The Pads help: but they don't isolate. You still have a lot of bass going straight into the desk. I bought them pads at guitar-center in Boston, not at amazon and I paid USD 30.--. The pads are nice, but way below studio quality.
With my setup, I could not hear any benefit when using the pads vs not using them. I originally got the pads to change the angle of my monitors and point them more towards my ears. For this purpose they are kind of ugly and I eventually found some very small speakers stands that just raise the speakers up 4-5". I was using with a pair of 8" m-audio 8X8a speakers that were just sitting on a wooden desktop. The speakers come with a very small isolation pad.
These do as advertised by eliminating speaker transfer into shelves or, in my case, cabinet. Nice looking, quality product, but it really is just cut foam. I was hesitant to buy at the price, but you can't make anything like them yourself, so buy these.
Great at decoupling and controlling those phantom bass frequencies your desk or speaker stands may be contributing to. I'm surprised I took as long as I did to purchase these for my setup, because they are crucial. Usually all of my upgrades are really expensive and only produce small improvements to my total studio experience, but these are very inexpensive and really cleaned up my low-end.
